I am a HypnoBirthing practitioner trained to offer the Mindful Mamma - 1 day course. I previously trained in the Mongan Method of HypnoBirthing and have been teaching since 2013. I teach private classes from my studio in Margate.

The Hypnobirthing approach was invaluable in my own birthing and I feel passionate about passing on the philosophy and techniques to other coupes at this very special time.

An Overview
What is Hypnobirthing?

Hypnobirthing is a complete birth education programme that helps you approach your birth free of the fear and tension that prevents the birthing muscles of your body from functioning as Nature intended them to.

The programme uses tried and tested breathing techniques, visualisations, self-hypnosis and affirmations alongside scientific knowledge to support you in your birth. It doesn’t require any particular belief system, or prior experience and you’ll always be aware of what is happening to you and around you, yet you'll train your mind to feel deeply relaxed. These techniques are hugely beneficial in life outside pregnancy too, both for the mum to be and the birth companion.

What you'll learn

How the uterus works and how fear affects labour and the uterine muscles.

The history of women and birthing to understand where fear can originate from.

The role of the birth companion.

Breathing, self-hypnosis exercises and massage to relax deeply and overcome fear.

The stages of birth, how the body functions and how to work with it.

You’ll learn how to release the fears and anxieties you may currently have about giving birth.

Optimal birthing positions.

How to reduce the need for medication during birth.

How to manage the sensations of labour without drugs.

How to be medically informed and be able to confidently discuss your options with medical staff to potentially avoid intervention.

Be calm and relaxed in labour.

The importance of bonding with your baby and ways this can be encouraged during pregnancy, birth and beyond.

Who is HypnoBirthing suitable for?

HypnoBirthing® is suitable for first time mums and mums who've had children before.

It has been designed to help women prepare themselves for a calmer, more natural birth experience and is particularly helpful if you are worried about birth because it's new to you, or are anxious because of a difficult experience last time.

It's suitable for couples or birth companions (a friend, doula, parent) who want to be involved in helping prepare for the birthing experience and be actively involved.

Who is HypnoBirthing suitable for?

The HypnoBirthing course consists of five classes of 2.5 hours each.

The ideal time to start the course is between the 25th and 30th week of pregnancy, however the course is beneficial at any time, and refresher sessions are available closer to birth if needed.

What's included in the course?

The original HypnoBirthing book by Marie Mongan

The tracks of the Rainbow Relaxation and the Affirmations (for home practice)

FAQ: Is Hypnobirthing safe?

Hypnosis is absolutely safe and nothing to be scared of.

Unfortunately, TV, film and stage portrayal of hypnosis has left a lot of people with a mistaken view of what hypnosis is, and what it can (and can’t) do - we talk through this on the course, and we can discuss it on the phone beforehand if you'd prefer.

FAQ: Can you guarantee a completely pain-free labour and birth?

No. There are many factors that can affect a birth, some of which are outside our control.

Also, like any childbirth preparation class, the success of the techniques is related to the amount of practice you put in. However, as a guide, we find that around 65-70% of Hypnobirthing mums don’t need any form of pain relief. Nearly all the mums in this category simply don’t experience any pain – just pressure. Around a further 20-25% only require something mild, like gas and air. The remaining 5-10% usually fall into what we call ‘special circumstances’, where medical intervention is required.

However, the Hypnobirthing mums still tell us that Hypnobirthing really helped – even if they were induced, or ended up with a caesarean.

The aim of Hypnobirthing is not a completely pain-free and picture-perfect ‘natural’ birth (although that is possible).

It is to have a calmer, easier, more comfortable birth - where you are in control – and in a way that most mirrors Nature.

FAQ: When should I start the classes?

Somewhere between 25-30 weeks is ideal, as the success of the course is strongly linked to how much practice you do.

FAQ: Does my partner have to attend the classes?

Yes – birthing companions are a very important part of Hypnobirthing success.

However, if your partner/husband cannot attend all the classes and/or help you practice or attend the birth, your mother, sister or friend can also be your birthing companion.

Whoever you choose (and we strongly recommend it’s the father if at all possible, as it helps build a strong relationship with the child), it's important that they attend all the classes and the birth.

One of the most common things that women report helped them in their labour are the breathing techniques that they have learnt, which have helped them enter deep states of relaxation, so I aim to make my sessions as interactive as possible. We practice these techniques so that they are stored in the muscle memory of the body by the time you come to your birthing.

These sessions offer space to relax and as we train ourselves to come into deep states of relaxation, we also develop the skills of staying in the present moment in birth, moving away from fear and surrendering to the experience.

I'm particularly interested in the mind's effect on the 'robot' body and how we can train our own mind to perceive the world in a way which is truthful yet beneficial to us, moving away from self sabotaging thought patterns. You come away from the sessions with a tool kit of techniques and feeling positive and confident about your birthing.

"We wanted to thank you so much for all your help with Hypnobirthing. We had such an amazing experience in our birth and completely believe Hypnobirthing was the reason. We had the natural birth we had hoped for, 15 hours in total. Mostly spent in the birthing pool, using gas and air in the last 2 hours".
